Profitpoint Business Solutions

A practice built for the work that sits between compliance and exit options

Profitpoint Business Solutions is an independent advisory practice working with regional SME owners and the professional firms who advise them. The work centres on a single question: "is this business actually transferable - can the owner step back, sell, or pass it on without it losing value or falling over?"

For most owner-led businesses, the honest answer is not yet. The profit is real but unpredictable. The systems exist, but mostly inside the owner's head. The team is loyal, but not yet capable of running things without supervision. There's no documented pathway out.
None of these are tax problems or compliance problems - they're structural ones. And they're the ones we work on.

Why this work, why now?

A generation of owners is approaching transition — and most aren't ready

Most owner-led businesses sit in a gap nobody is formally responsible for. Compliance is handled. Tax is handled. The day-to-day work gets done. But the structural questions - is this business actually transferable, what's it worth, what's the pathway out - sit outside the scope of any existing engagement. So they get postponed.

The 2026 Findex SME Growth Index found that 85% of Australian SMEs say they lack the strategic advice they need to grow, yet only 19% report succession or exit planning as a current priority. Over the next decade, hundreds of thousands of business owners will face transition decisions — sale, succession, step-back, or closure — and the gap between the number approaching that moment and the number actually prepared for it represents one of the largest structural risks in the regional SME economy.

That reality sits inside almost every regional accounting firm's client book. The owner who's been at it for 25 years and is quietly tired. The business that's profitable on paper but couldn't survive a fortnight without the founder. The family who assumed the kids would take over, and the kids who've politely made other plans.

These owners aren't failing. They're succeeding, in the way their generation defined success - by working harder than anyone else and holding the whole thing together personally. The problem is that the same instinct that built the business is now what makes it impossible to leave. They don't need motivation. They need a structured way out.

That's what this practice is for.

About Ian

Ian Woodhouse is the principal advisor at Profitpoint Business Solutions and a certified Business Transition Advisor through the Institute of Advisors (IOA) - Australia's professional body for advisory & exit and succession planning — and works specifically on the advisory ground that sits between an accountant's compliance scope and the eventual sale, succession, or step-back.

His background is operational. Before founding Profitpoint, Ian spent more than two decades in operational leadership roles inside SMEs and mid-market businesses, leading operations, profit improvement, and team performance—experience that now underpins his advisory work with business owners.

The advisory practice is the result of taking what worked across those years, structuring it into a repeatable framework, and combining it with a recognised exit-planning credential so it's grounded in something more than personal opinion.

He works with a small number of owners at any one time. Engagements are hands-on, structured, and deliberately scoped - there is no team being marketed up to look bigger than it is.

The practice is the practitioner.

How we approach the work

Every engagement runs through the same six-pillar framework — the structural conditions that determine whether a business is genuinely transferable, or only appears to be. Profit, systems, team, transition pathway, operational leadership, and the strategic advisory layer that holds it all together.

The work always starts with a structured diagnostic that names which of the six are strong, which are exposed, and where the gaps sit. From there, engagement follows a structured pathway - diagnostic, blueprint, implementation, ongoing advisory - scoped to what the business actually needs.

Where the framework runs deepest

The Tradie Growth Hub

The framework works across all SMEs, but it's most fully developed for trade businesses - HVAC, electrical, plumbing - where delivery has been systemised through Tradie Growth Hub.

Trade businesses share a common structure: technically strong owners, solid revenue, profit that fluctuates without obvious cause, systems that live in people's heads, and almost no internal pathway out. The same six pillars apply, but the diagnostics, language, and case studies are sharpened to that segment.

For trade businesses in the $1.5M-$10M range, Tradie Growth Hub is the primary entry point. With all other businesses, the work runs directly through Profitpoint.

Working with accountants

A significant portion of our work comes through accounting firms and other professional advisors who recognise when a client’s challenges sit outside compliance and into operational and structural performance.

If you're considering whether Profitpoint might be the right fit for one of your clients, a few commitments worth knowing up front:

  • We don't take over the client relationship. You remain the primary advisor. We deliver scoped work, report back, and the client continues with you for everything else.

  • We don't compete on tax, structure, or compliance. That's your ground. We operate on the operational and structural side that sits adjacent to it.

  • We engage on referral, not direct prospecting into your client base. We're not running campaigns into the firms we work alongside.

  • The client knows you sent them — and stays your client throughout. The referral is acknowledged. Your relationship with the client is reinforced, not diluted.

The work is structured around making that referral easy to make and easy to defend — to clients, to partners, and to yourself.

We typically work with regional SME business owners in the $1.5M - $10M range, who:

  • Are heavily relied on to keep the business operating day-to-day

  • Have a profitable business but lack clear structure or consistency

  • Are considering sale, succession, or stepping back within the next 2-5 years

  • Want to improve performance without adding unnecessary complexity

  • Need support that sits beyond standard accounting and compliance scope

Who This is For

Why Clients Choose Profitpoint

Profitpoint provides structured advisory that connects financial performance, operational execution, and owner readiness. Drawing on more than two decades of operational experience inside SMEs and mid-market businesses, this approach brings a level of structured thinking often missing in regional advisory. The focus is on improving profitability, reducing reliance on the owner, and establishing a clear pathway for transition — whether that is sale, succession, or long-term ownership.
